A project within the Cultural Programme 2007-2013 of the European Union.
As a member of the International Network Ciudades Que Danzan, ARTU takes part in the European
project LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE with three different activities: a focus group, a film
production and a special editing of the annual magazine Dancing Cities. Partners are DIES DE
DANSA in Barcelona and EMPAPE in A Coruña (SPAIN), CORPI URBANI in Genova and
INTERFERENZE in Teramo (ITALY), DANTZA HIRIAN in Hiria - Baiona - Donostia (SPAIN -
FRANCE), DANCING DAYS in Swansea (UK), CITY HOPPERS in Malmö (SWEDEN), DANSE
EN VILLE in Liege - Eupen (BELGIUM).
Several focus groups in the participant cities will be developed with experts in the field of
urbanism, sociology, anthropology, architecture, art and dance. Each focus group will carry on
critical studies on their city (or a specific part of the city) from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The
themes addressed during the discussions will be the same in all participant cities, with the objective
to obtain, at the end of the project, different visions about the same themes in the form of theoretical
articles and documents. The results of the different focus groups will be included in the special
edition of the Dancing Cities annual Magazine.
In Barcelona, Mälmo, Genova and Swansea a creative audiovisual work will be produced.
Reflecting on the relationship between the citizen, the public space and the dance, in four different
countries, the idea is to propose a videodance whose main characters are the city and the dance. The
urban, therefore, will not be just a background for the dancer. The dancers will get their inspiration
out of the specific tension in the carefully chosen public spaces. They will also try to capture the
characteristic urban life/movement of each city through its sightseeing, streets, people, urban noises,
etc; combining then the movement of the city with the movement of the dancer.
The overall objective of the project is the democratization of culture by strengthening ties between
several European cities belonging to the Dancing Cities Network fostering art and dance in public
spaces as a tool for social integration and cohesion.

The project Corpi Urbani/Urban Bodies consists of several performances - some of which are site specific productions - taking place in different areas of town such as streets, squares, shop windows, natural areas, historical palaces and museums. The main idea is to allow people to experience dance shows for free, and locate them in a familiar environment. A second goal is to explore the art form of contemporary dance, proposing it in a simple and direct way and encourage people to discover its sense of spontaneity and immediate appeal in unusual settings. The “special occasion” value around the project makes dance more accessible and persuade people to perceive their urban surroundings in a different way. Corpi Urbani is supposed to be a community experience, presented to the city and created for it.
»The project has been conceived by different arts organisations based in Italy and France. Four regions (Piemonte and Liguria in Italy, Rhône Alpes and PACA in France), a common interest in dance and the urban space, a shared intention to collaborate. The main objective has been to give a concrete opportunity to artists to relate with an unusual contest and exchange their body languages one another. LUOGHI COMUNI invests on new production and touring. Each partner chooses one or two young choreographers/dancers, orders a creation in the city environment (a common element to every city, such as fountains, steps, shop windows, buses, phone boxes, etc.) and then makes them touring. Every year the productions are hosted in the network cities and they can be presented as a specific event or as part of a festival.
